Project Two- Room and Narrative

The man who hates light and keeps secrets from his wife...

The building is located on a small cliff that meets a sand bed and the ocean. 2/3 of the building’s tower is located within the cliff.

To accommodate the character narrative, a universal space is designed to inhabit both the woman’s and man’s wants and needs. The woman is the total opposite to her husband and therefore the design must accommodate her need while still incorporating her husband’s needs. A room that suits her needs needs to be designed. To achieve the needs successfully three rooms were created.

Her room is open and large because she likes light and viewing the world. His room is small, dark and placed in the corner, with no windows to emphasis his personality. There is also a common room which accommodates both needs by finding the medium level of light.

To control the access of light throughout the house there are shades on the roof that rise, so if the wife is home alone and would like more natural light throughout the house, the shades can be lifted to allow abundance of light to enter, but when her husband comes home they can be lowered to control light flow.
The secret room is located down a ladder and flights of stairs in the tower of the building.

To access the secret room there is a ‘trap door’ located in the corner of his room. The secret room has an alternate exit which leads out to a bed of sand. The alternate exit is to allow the husband to escape his wife or just to get out of the house.
